Enriching the Experience

Educational Programming

The Ford’s Theatre education program will use a variety of artistic- and inquiry-based learning strategies to impart lessons regarding the leadership and legacy of Abraham Lincoln that still resonate today.

A newly-created Tenth Street campus will house the education program. The campus will be comprised of the theatre building and its new adjoining lobby space, the Petersen House and a soon-to-be-purchased property at 514 Tenth Street, adjacent to the Petersen House. Through a new, robust Web- and off-site extension programming, Ford’s Theatre will expand its reach into classrooms across the nation.

Between the Tenth Street facilities and the “virtual campus” offerings, Ford’s Theatre will provide:

  • Experiential learning centered on Abraham Lincoln, his presidency and the Civil War era
  • Compelling and engaging American history and social studies lessons for students of all ages, conveyed through theatrical performances, story-telling and museum education strategies
  • A rich collection of artifacts and resources relating to the life and legacy of President Lincoln
  • Special materials and opportunities for educators to explore President Lincoln’s unparalleled leadership and vision
  • An upgraded and enhanced museum experience with interactive exhibits and artifacts from Lincoln’s assassination and the Civil War era
  • Programming that provides additional opportunities for families and school groups to explore Lincoln’s legacy through a variety of creative workshops
  • Opportunities for students worldwide to engage in the theatre experience virtually
  • Lectures hosted by scholars from the Ford’s Theatre Advisory Council
  • Performances by renowned artists

"Upon the subject of education, not presuming to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in."
—President Abraham Lincoln
